  1. How To Make Something A Pdf File
This help page is a how-to guide.
It details processes or procedures of some aspect(s) of Wikipedia's norms and practices. It is not one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, and may reflect varying levels of consensus and vetting.

Give the PDF a different name than the original document. That way, you'll have two files: a Word document you can continue to edit and a PDF file you can share. If you don't change the name, your document will be converted to a PDF and you won't be able to change it back without using specialized software or a third-party add-in.

A free software alternative is MediaWiki2LaTeX. It works with any website running MediaWiki, like Wikipedia and Wikibooks. It may be used online or installed locally.

You can export a Wikipedia page such as an article and save it as a PDF file in several ways:

  • Some web browsers allow you to simply Save As... or Print to PDF.
  • Wikipedia's inbuilt Download as PDF option.
  • Other PDF software can be used to create a PDF from the web page, which may give more control over the output.
  • Select Save as PDF next to Destination. It's on the left side of the Print window. The drop-down menu lists all available Printers. Selecting 'Save as PDF' indicates that you wish to save the document in PDF format instead of printing it.
  • Save as (or Print to) a PDF in Windows 10. Open the message you want to save, and on the File tab, click Print. From the Printer drop-down, choose Microsoft Print to PDF. In the Save Print Output As box, choose a folder for your PDF and enter a file name. Then choose Save.
  • In Windows 10: Open a document. Open the document, file, or web page that you'd like to save in.

This page offers help with Wikipedia's download tool.

Creating a PDF[edit]

Browse to the page you want to download. Make sure you have Desktop view selected. Mobile devices which default to the Mobile view do not display the required options; to switch to Desktop view, scroll to the bottom of the page and select Desktop.

In the left sidebar, under Print/export select Download as PDF. The rendering engine starts and a dialog appears to show the rendering progress. When rendering is complete, the dialog shows 'The document file has been generated. Download the file to your computer.' Click the download link to open the PDF in your selected PDF viewer.

PDFs are rendered in a single full-width column. At the end are added:

  • The url of the page
  • The time and date at which the page was last modified
  • Copyright licensing information

Links within the article and to external sites are preserved. They are not highlighted, but your device's user interface will typically indicate when you are hovering over a link.

PDF viewers[edit]

To view the PDF you must have a browser or other application which directly supports PDF viewing. For browser support, see Comparison of web browsers § Image format support. For PDF applications, see List of PDF software.

Issues[edit]

  1. PDFs are rendered in a single full-width column; this cannot be changed
  2. The table of contents is included
  3. Tables, including most infoboxes, are rendered. Some small types of box used for local on-wiki information are omitted.
  4. Images and galleries are rendered
  5. Long equations are overflowing
  6. The 'Download as PDF' option might not appear when using a custom theme on Wikipedia on some desktop web browsers.

Google Chrome Browser Has Built-in Save as PDF Function

There are times where you may want to save a web page as a PDF. This is a great option to use to archive a web page that may be changed, such as a post showing a celebrity drinking Dragon Blood and waving a sword from the top of a building.

Maybe you want to save an article on the local newspaper's web site showing you son's great last-minute touchdown. If you wrote an article on how to grow orchids that was accepted by a horticultural web site you may want to save it and get bragging rights at your garden club meeting when you pass out your article.

Google's Chrome browser has the Save as PDF built into its browser. To do this with other browsers, you have to get an add-in or purchase a PDF program that has a PDF printer driver.

To access this function, go to the web page you wish to save as a PDF. Find and click on the Chrome Customize and control icon.

Next, select Print. Yes, there is a Save page as… option, but that will only let you save the web page as HTML or a complete web page, not as a PDF file. We have no idea why the PDF function is not here.

You will now see a split-screen showing a preview of web page on the right side and a print options panel on the left.

Notice the Destination section. You should see Save as PDF. We have circled this in red. If you see a printer instead, click on the Change button and select the Save as PDF option. There are other options you can change if you wish.

Now click the Save button, which we have circled in green.

You will get a Save As screen where you can change the filename and where you wish to save it.

Click the Save button and your web page will be saved as a PDF. That is all there is to it with no add-ins or extra programs needed.
